Purpose
62 Ignite Innovation Vision: Provide all learners across the District a 1:1 tool to increase engagement, promote student voice and choice, and ignite creativity.
Alignment with Strategic Plan: The 62 Ignite Innovation initiative aligns with the District Strategic Plan that’s specifically focused on the areas centered around student engagement and student voice.
GOAL 5: MAKE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT USE OF RESOURCES TO MAXIMIZE EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS FOR EACH STUDENT, EVERY SCHOOL, AND THE DISTRICT.
Strategy 3: Advance the use of technology as a tool to enhance teaching and learning.
Benefits of Use: The iPad provides tools for students to access information, collaborate, and create projects to present their views and ideas on their learning for an authentic audience. Along with the built-in cameras and an audio recorder, apps such as Keynote, Clips, Pages, Explain Everything, and Seesaw allow students to express their understanding in new and creative ways. Engagement and quality of work has been shown to increase when students have choice in how they demonstrate their learning and when they receive feedback from others.
Ownership and Care of Device
Receiving your District Device: District iPad devices will be distributed by homeroom teachers as part of an iPad orientation held at the start of school. Sixth-Eighth Grade students will not be allowed to take home the District iPad device until this agreement has been reviewed.
Ownership: The District retains ownership of the iPad. The device/equipment must be turned over to District staff upon request for content inspection, maintenance, or other administrative or support actions. District staff retain the right to collect and/or inspect the device and its content and alter, add, or delete installed software or hardware at any time.
Reasonable Care of Device: It is the responsibility of the student and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) to exercise reasonable care over the device and provided accessories at all times.
Device Care Expectations:
-
Keep the iPad within the provided case and do not remove or alter serial numbers and identification tags.
-
Keep the iPad free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels that are not the property of the District.
-
District iPad devices should never be used, stored, or transported in the same location as liquids, water bottles, and food.
-
Handle the device carefully. Screens can crack when dropped or subjected to pressure like stepping or leaning on them. Don’t stack other objects (books, binders, etc.) on top of the iPad.
-
Only use a clean, soft cloth or microfiber cloth to clean the screen; no cleansers of any type.
-
Insert cords and cables carefully to prevent damage.
-
Don’t leave the iPad in places of extreme temperature, humidity, or limited ventilation (e.g., in a car) for an extended period of time.
-
Always secure in a safe and locked location and do not leave in any unsupervised area.
Home Use: In sixth-eighth grade, the student may be allowed to take the device home. When using the iPad outside of school, the student is bound by the same policies, procedures, and guidelines as at school. Students are allowed to access free and/or home wireless networks on their District iPad. It is incumbent upon parents to monitor and manage student internet activity outside of school. It is the prerogative of the parents to limit or restrict their child’s District iPad use, including access to the internet at home. The Internet will be filtered the same way in and out of school. Students are responsible for bringing their iPad to school every day fully charged and in their cases. Students who repeatedly leave their District iPad device at home may lose at‐home privileges for a period of time as defined by their homeroom teacher or grade level team. Students will be responsible to work with their teachers to complete assignments in the event of forgetting to bring an iPad to school. Additionally, as classrooms have a limited number of charging stations, teachers/schools will monitor the number of times a device comes to school uncharged. Consequences for repeated failure to charge devices may be given at the discretion of the teacher or building principal.
Returning the District iPad: The District may require the student to return the device at any time, including if the student is no longer enrolled in the District or at the end of the school year. The student must return the device and the related accessories (case, charger, charging cable, Logitech Crayon) in working order. A student who fails to produce the device and/or accessories may be subject to discipline or other consequences. The District may impose fines including the full replacement cost of the iPad for $394 or the full replacement cost of issued accessories.
Stolen Property Report: Students who do not return District-owned devices when requested or upon withdrawal from Des Plaines School District 62 may result in the District filing a stolen property report with local law enforcement. Unauthorized persons in possession of District property are subject to prosecution under Illinois law.
Lost or Damaged Device: Students/parents must immediately notify their homeroom teacher and school administrators if a device is missing. All devices lost outside the school building will require the parents/guardian to file a police report prior to receiving a replacement. Students are also responsible for immediately reporting any damage to their homeroom teacher and/or their Library Media Center Specialist. Damaged, lost or stolen accessories, such as carrying cases, chargers and cables, are the sole responsibility of the student/parent/guardian. On a case-by-case basis, the technology department will review incidents causing damage that require repair and will determine if the student and the parent/guardian will be held responsible for partial or full replacement costs of the device and if the student will be allowed to continue to take home the iPad. The School Administration will hear any appeals.
Repairing the Device: The District is the only party authorized to initiate repair or service the iPad and provided resources. Students must take their damaged device to their homeroom teacher for repairs. The District will replace or repair broken related resources. If repairs are required, a loaner device may be issued to the student if one is available.
No expectation of Privacy
District Right to Monitor: Because the student is using a District-owned device, users have no expectation of privacy or confidentiality with respect to the use of District-owned devices regardless of whether the student uses the device for school or personal related purposes. The District has the right to access, review, copy, delete, disclose, as allowed by law, any data or electronic message sent, received, or stored within the device. The device may contain tracking software that allows the District to obtain and record information concerning use or location of the device and allows the district to lock or “brick” a device that may be lost or stolen.
Passwords: To the extent permitted by law, the student must provide building administrators with usernames, passwords, and/or passcodes to a device and its contained software upon request. Failure to provide administrators with access to the device may result in the student being subject to discipline or other consequences.
District Retention of Records Created by the Device: To the extent permitted by law, the District may retain any records, including but not limited to electronic communications, such as emails and messages on personal social media accounts, from the device that it determines must be retained by law, including public records under the Illinois Local Records Act, school student records under the Illinois School Student Records Act, and educational records under FERPA.
Appropriate Use
School-Related Uses: The iPad is intended for school-related/educational purposes only. Use of the device must comply with all District policies and procedures. I will tell my parents or teacher right away if I see any information or messages on the District iPad that are mean or make me feel uncomfortable.
Using Device Outside of School: Device use on and off campus must be in accordance with the mission and philosophy of District 62. Teachers may set additional usage requirements to support the educational environment in their respective classes. Students are expected to use their school-issued device on school-related assignments. They are bound by the District 62 Policies listed in paragraph 4 of this Section as well as all other District 62 policies and Board policies whenever they use their device outside of school. District 62’s rental of the device to the student does not create any duty on the part of District 62 to provide supervision of the use of the device or protection of the student regarding use of the device off school grounds or outside of school hours. It is the sole responsibility of the parent(s)/guardian(s) to supervise the student use of the device when off school grounds or outside of school.
Lending of Device Prohibited: Students may not loan their device to another student or family member.
District Policies: The student’s use of the device, both during school and outside of school hours, is subject to all District policies and procedures, including but not limited to the following policies and their related procedures:
- 6:235 Access to Electronic Networks for Instructional Use
- 6:260 Complaints About Curriculum, Instructional Materials, and Programs
- 7:130 Student Rights and Responsibilities
- :180 Prevention of and Response to Bullying, Intimidation, and Harassment
- 7:190 Student Behavior
- 7:310 Restrictions on Publications
The District reserves its right to block application functionality, implement security measures, change settings, or take other administrative or security steps, as deemed necessary in the District’s sole discretion. Any attempt to modify (i.e., “Jailbreak”) the device/equipment, including but not limited to changing internet access settings, will be considered a violation of District policy. Inappropriate or unauthorized use in violations of the above-mentioned District 62 policies, this agreement, or any other applicable Board policies may result in disciplinary action up to and including suspension or expulsion.
Storage Management: Data is stored through installed apps, District Google Education accounts, and managed Education Apple IDs. School content takes priority over any personal photos, videos, music, and non-District Apps.
Installation of Applications: The District provides District-purchased software on devices. Parent(s)/guardian(s) acknowledge that the District is not responsible for the student’s activities performed while using any applications. Charges from Apple, Google, or other third party providers that are generated from within any application or content/media (i.e., “In-App Purchases”) are the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian. Students are only allowed to download application approved by the district and in the device catalog.
