Increasing Literacy Skills in 2nd Grade!
Plainfield
Students in Ms. Carnota Costa's 2nd grade bilingual class had a great time practicing and increasing their reading skills this week.
In second grade, children go beyond just the pronunciation of words and start focusing on the meanings and implications behind the words.
Their focus changes from decoding, or sounding out, words to learning the "basic mechanics" of reading.
Second graders practiced reading by themselves. Then they took turns reading to each other.
They ended the lesson with a Kagan "Inside-Outside Circle" learning activity. Students moved around in a circle and interacted with each other to review content, concepts and skills.
Students were engaged and had fun participating in this learning activity.
