Seventh and eighth-grade students had a fun time trying out for the Wolfpack soccer team this year.

This is the first year District 62 has offered soccer as one of its athletic programs, and these students were the first group to try out. Boys' soccer is played in the fall, and girls' soccer will be held in the spring. The students started tryouts by running two laps around the field.

They then met with Assistant Principal Mr. Rey, who emphasized prioritizing academics over sports. He noted that if students were not doing well academically, it could lead to being benched during games or removed from the team entirely.

Next, eighth-grade coach Ms. Redding explained the tryout plan and emphasized the importance of teamwork. She asked students which positions they preferred and had them stretch on the field.

The eighth-grade students then lead the seventh-grade students through a variety of warm-ups and stretches.

In the first exercise, students stood facing each other and passed the soccer ball back and forth.

Ms. Redding had them step back after every few passes, moving further apart to see how well they could pass from a distance.

Students enjoyed practicing their passes and seeing how far they could kick the ball to reach their partners.

Next, the coaches set up cones on opposite sides of the field and had students pass the ball back and forth as they moved down the field, hoping to score a goal before the goalkeeper stopped the play.

Through this exercise, the coaches wanted to see how well the students communicated and worked together as a team.

The students soon realized that if they weren't communicating well or were trying to do everything themselves, it usually led to the goalie getting the ball before they could take a shot.

The coaches then added two defenders to assist the goalie, making the drill even more challenging.

The offensive players had to learn to communicate and pass to one another to get past the defenders and score.

It was an exciting day for students who had been waiting for soccer to come to Iroquois for a long time.

They are looking forward to starting the season and putting in the hard work required to build a successful team.
