D62 Olympians Shine at Spring Track and Field Competition!

On April 25 a group of 27 athletes from Chippewa and Algonquin Middle Schools and Cumberland and Terrace Elementary Schools participated in the Special Olympics Track and Field Competition at Hoffman Estates High School.

The district had 10 coaches, many amazing paraprofessionals and some staff and student buddy volunteers all there to cheer on and support our D62 athletes!

The D62 athletes competed in a variety of events including the 50 meter run, the 100 meter run, the wheelchair race, assisted race, tennis ball throw and softball throw, to name a few.

After 8 weeks of practice, and a long day of competition, the D62 athletes truly came out on top!

D62 athletes took a total of 14 gold medals, 13 silver medals, 9 bronze medals and 18 participation awards!

After earning gold medals, 11 D62 athletes qualified to head down to Illinois State University in mid June to compete in their respective events for the state competition.

District 62 is beyond proud of every athlete!

This is D62's second year competing in the Special Olympics Spring Track and Field competition.
