Special Olympics Students Shine on the Basketball Court

District 62 students participated in the 2025 Region B Basketball Skills Special Olympics at Niles West High School in Skokie on December 7.

A team of 19 athletes from Algonquin Middle School, Chippewa Middle School, Cumberland Elementary School and Terrace Elementary School showcased their talents on the basketball court.

The athletes brought home 10 participation awards, as well as three bronze medals, one silver medal and three gold medals. The gold medal winners will have the opportunity to advance to state!

“The Special Olympics program is a genuine reflection of our efforts to create meaningful opportunities and an inclusive environment for children,” said Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Dr. Ramona DeCristofaro. “This day was a celebration of teamwork and community support. We are very proud of our participating athletes and coaches.”

This past May, a team of nearly 30 athletes from District 62 participated in the Special Olympics for the first time.

According to the Special Olympics website, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.
