District 62 student Aidan Marshall was among those students selected from more than 80 school districts to receive the Infinitec Technology Achievement Award this month.

Aidan, a fifth grade student at Cumberland Elementary School, was honored at the April 24 Board of Education meeting for his use of assistive technology.

“The small role I play in helping educational teams remove barriers to communication is such a privilege,” said Erin Ballman, who serves as the district Assistive Technology Specialist and Infinitec liaison.

Speech Language Pathologist Mr. Jeff Stepen said he has always been impressed with Aidan's perseverance and growth with his AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) system.

"He continually absorbs academic vocabulary and demonstrates flexibility in relating information to others,” said Stepen.

Aidan was nominated for the use of his Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device across all environments with the continuous support from family and his educational team. “Aidan uses his device not only for communication but to engage in academics and socialize,” said teacher Michelle Buttita.

Aidan was honored at the annual banquet at The Cotillion in Palatine. Community Consolidated School District 62 is a member of Infinitec, which stands for infinite potential through technology. The assistive technology coalition works to advance independence and promote inclusive opportunities for children and adults with disabilities through technology. Infinitec operates as a division of United Cerebral Palsy of Chicago.
