Field Trip to Downtown Des Plaines
Fourth graders at Plainfield Elementary School recently visited three different locations in downtown Des Plaines to learn more about the history of the city and how it operates.
The students had the opportunity to visit Des Plaines City Hall where they learned about local government and civic duty. Fourth grader Khalil said it was fun learning what it was like to be mayor for a day.
Students met with the mayor, the city planner and the city engineer.
"I learned that some pipes make a “T” shape because it splits up clean water from not clean water so it is safe for us to drink." - Daniella
They even had the chance to participate in a mock city council meeting.
That same day the students also visited the Des Plaines Public Library and the Des Plaines History Center to learn about community, service and civic responsibility.
"I’m really happy to get my first library card! It was fun to check out books. I hope to come back with my family!" - Madison
"My favorite part was going into the sorting room and everybody got to put a book on the sorting machine." - Magaly
"I really enjoyed when we got to explore the Kinder House and test out the old items in the Visitor Center!" - Eden
Special thanks to Plainfield's fourth grade dream team, Nancy Blevins, Raúl Guerra and Shawn Mannion, for planning this amazing experience for our students!
