Author Visit

Author Visit
CCSD62

Local author, Fern Schumer Chapman, visited Algonquin Middle School 8th grade students on Friday, January 24.

Fern shared with the students the story of her mother, Edith Westerfeld, who was a Holocaust refugee.

The eighth grade students have been studying the Holocaust, so the author visit allowed the students to connect her story with what they have been learning.

In addition, 8th grade English Language Art teachers presented the opportunity for their students to participate in The Butterfly Project.

Each student learned about a child victim of the Holocaust, wrote a paragraph about them and painted a butterfly in remembrance of that child.

All of the butterflies were displayed in the Algonquin Middle School front lobby.
