Author Shares Her Mother's Holocaust Survival Story

Local author, Fern Schumer Chapman, visited Algonquin Middle School eighth grade students on Friday, February 20.

Chapman's mother, Edith Westerfeld, was a Holocaust refugee and she shared her mother's story with the students.

Ms. Erin Wengerhoff, Library Media Specialist at Algonquin, said the eighth graders have been studying the Holocaust in class, so Chapman's visit connected with what they have been learning.

In addition, eighth grade English Language Arts teachers presented their students with the opportunity to participate in The Butterfly Project.

As part of the project, each student researched a child victim of the Holocaust.

The students wrote letters to each Holocaust victim a paragraph and painted a butterfly in remembrance of them.
