Third graders at Cumberland Elementary School in Mr. Nathan Coon's music class are having fun learning how to play recorders and achieving colored karate belts in the process.

The students have the opportunity to earn different colored karate belts based on how well they can master their instrument.

One of the songs they are currently working on as a class is the song "Hot Cross Buns."

For the students to achieve a white belt they will need to be to play "Hot Cross Buns" twice by themselves.

The students used their iPads to record videos of themselves practicing the song and when they were happy with their recording, they submitted their video to Mr. Coon for review.

The students also had the chance to play the song for him in class.

The recorder karate belts help create a fun reward system for the students.

All of the students are hoping and determined to achieve their black belts in the recorder by the school year!
