Harrell is the author of Wink: Surviving Middle School With One Eye Open, which has been nominated
for a Rebecca Caudill award this year. All Chippewa students read the book as part of the summer
reading program.

Students had the chance to hear how Harrell started writing and drawing at a young age, how he
overcame obstacles throughout his life, and where he got the inspiration for Wink.

He also spent time teaching the students how to draw one of his popular comic book characters.

To close out his presentation, Harrell asked students for suggestions on different types of body parts, creating a
unique monster from scratch.

This visit was made possible thanks to a grant from the District 62 Education Foundation.
