Incoming Algonquin Middle School sixth graders had the opportunity to meet teachers and make new friends at the school's annual Panther Prep camp.

Students began their morning in the cafeteria, reconnecting with classmates they hadn't seen all summer and meeting new peers.

They then started to visit the class sessions following their 8th grade student leader. In one classroom the students were introduced to what middle school life is like at AMS.

They learned about what their class schedule looks like and how to read it, what the expectations for the students are and various clubs and activities that are offered throughout the year. They were asked to write down one thing they were excited about and one thing that made them nervous, which they then shared in small groups.

In another room, a math exercise challenged them to solve individual problems to answer an overall puzzle question.

In the science room, students built paper helicopters by cutting along solid lines and following folding instructions. Once finished, they dropped the  paper helicopters to test their flight and landing.

A popular activity that morning was mastering combination locks, where students learned how to open them and practiced multiple times to make sure they were ready for the first day. 8th grade students walked around the room and helped students who were having a hard time opening them.

Students also engaged in team-building exercises. Using Kagan cooperative learning structures, they go to know one another better. In another physical challenge, groups started on a blue tarp and had to move to a second tarp a distance away without touching the gym floor.

Thank you to all of the 8th grade students who volunteered their time to help out. The incoming sixth graders had a great morning and are looking forward to the new school year!
