Drawing Illusions of Depth

Algonquin
Algonquin Middle School sixth graders in Mr. Howard Kanter's art class learned how to create depth with perspective landscape drawings.
Mr. Kanter began the class by going over what a foreground, a mid-ground and a background is within a drawing.
He talked about the techniques used to create the illusion of depth and how to make a two dimensional drawing appear as if it was a three dimensional one.
The students gathered around Mr. Kanter as he demonstrated the techniques and they were impressed by how quickly he could draw a landscape image.
After the lesson, the students started working on their own sketches, using various drawing and shading techniques.
Mr. Kanter walked around the room, meeting with each of the students and giving them feedback and praise.
If a student was stuck on drawing something, Mr. Kanter showed them a way to start it by using simple lines and shapes to build what they were hoping to draw.
Some of the students drew landscapes of mountains and hot air balloons, while others drew landscapes of suburban areas.
Next week the students will be painting their perspective landscape drawings.
This is Mr. Kanter's 30th year in District 62 and he will be retiring at the end of the this school year. The entire district wishes him all of the very best!
