Seventh-grade students in Mr. Yamane's science class used microscopes to study different samples and determine whether they were unicellular or multicellular.

A child's hands hold open a textbook with colorful images and text, while a blurry background suggests a classroom setting.
A young boy in the foreground is focused on writing with a pencil, while blurred figures and a bright background suggest a classroom setting.
A close-up shot shows a person's hands holding a pencil over a worksheet with math problems, while a dark surface is visible in the background.

Mr. Yamane started the lesson by explaining what unicellular and multicellular organisms are and what they look like.

A young boy in a grey t-shirt focuses on his work in the foreground, while other students are blurred in the background of a classroom.
A lab worksheet with handwritten notes and a diagram of cells is in the foreground, with a dark tablet device in the background.
A young boy in a grey hoodie holds a yellow pencil while looking to the side, with blurred figures and a classroom setting in the background.

Students were then asked to read along in their workbooks and underline the section stating that only living things have cells.

A student's hands hold a pen over a science textbook page about cells, with a blurred background of more books.
A young boy with curly hair focuses intently on his work at a desk in the foreground, while a teacher in a colorful shirt stands in the blurred background of a classroom.
A child's hand holds a pencil, writing in a science textbook with a blurred background.

He then explained the microscope stations set up around the room. Each station already had a microscope set up with a slide of one of the samples they were going to examine.

A young student in the foreground focuses on writing in a notebook, while another student in the background works at a desk in a classroom adorned with colorful educational posters.
A child's hand, holding a pencil, writes in a notebook with a science experiment procedure, while a blurred background suggests a classroom setting.
A person with pink hair peers into a microscope in the foreground, while another person uses a microscope in the blurred background.

There were six stations featuring paramecium, nylon fibers, onion root, bacteria, human skin, and salt.

A young boy with curly hair peers into a microscope in the foreground, while other students and a whiteboard are visible in the blurred background.
A young girl with long brown hair peers into a microscope in the foreground, while a blurred classroom with other students and a bulletin board is visible in the background.
A person in a lab coat adjusts a slide on a microscope, with a bright, blurred background.

After reviewing the stations, he asked the students to create a plan for how they would view the samples, record their observations, and draw what they saw.

A young girl with glasses and long brown hair writes in a notebook at a desk, with a classroom setting visible in the background.
A child's hands write on a worksheet with a pencil, with a wooden desk and a colorful box in the background.
A young boy in a blue t-shirt peers into a microscope in the foreground, while other students are visible in the blurred background of a classroom.

Working with their table partners, the students developed their plans and wrote them in their workbooks.

Hands write observations on a worksheet with a pencil, while a colorful border is visible in the background.
Two young boys are intently focused on a microscope in the foreground, with a blurred classroom environment visible in the background.

Each group then started at a station and had ten minutes to examine the sample, write down their observations, and determine whether it was unicellular or multicelluar.

A young woman in a red shirt with glasses is writing on a paper in the foreground, while a blurry blue crate is visible in the background.
A young girl with long brown hair peers through a microscope in a classroom with blurry posters in the background.
A pencil rests on an open science notebook filled with handwritten observations and data tables, with a blurred background suggesting a desk or table.

They rotated through all six stations, completing the tasks for each.

Two young boys examine a microscope in a classroom with blurred figures in the background.
A student's hand, wearing a blue and white striped sleeve, writes in a science worksheet with a blue pen, while a blurred background shows more of the worksheet and a desk.
A young girl with glasses writes in a notebook at a desk with a microscope in the foreground, while other students work in the blurred background of a classroom.

If a group finished early at a station, an extra microscope was available where they could examine additional samples not part of the main assignment.

A hand selects a microscope slide from a box filled with many slides, with a blurred blue surface in the background.
A young boy in a white t-shirt focuses on a small object in his hands, with a blurred background of white and blue.
A young boy in a white shirt peers intently into a microscope in the foreground, while another boy is blurred in the background of a classroom.

They had a great time viewing the samples on a microscopic level and were surprised by the colors, shapes, and structures they saw.
