Girls on the Run!
Girls on the Run is a program that meets twice a week and culminates in a 5K at Grant Park in Chicago with GOTR groups from all over the Chicagoland area.
At AMS, 6th Grade ELA Teacher and Girls on the Run Coach, Ms. Katie Aske, said they use the "Heart and Sole" program, which is geared specifically toward sixth through eighth grade girls.
She said the goal of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to recognize their inner strengths and abilities, increase their physical activity, and stand up for themselves and others.
At each practice, the girls start by spending time teaching and practicing essential life skills such as managing emotions, fostering friendships and expressing empathy.
Then, they blend physical activity with these lessons, spend time on strength and conditioning, and build their stamina with walking and running until they are ready to end the season with the 5K.
Aske said the program considers the whole person – body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection.
