Message from the President of the Board of Education

Stephanie Duckmann, President of Board of Education

I am proud to have been vice president of the District 62 Board of Education for the past eleven years and am honored to serve as president for the 2015-16 school year. I look forward to the new challenge in my life as we continue “Working Together for Our Children.”

I thank former board President Brenda Murphy for her many years of service and being a valuable mentor. Our board welcomes new board member, Beth Morley, along with returning board members Sharon Lynch and Terry Lindsay, who were elected in April.

I am proud for all that this board and district have accomplished, including the successful renovations to our buildings and adding the Early Learning Center. All of our buildings are updated, secure and embedded with new technology.

Last year we started a partnership with Discovery Education to provide professional development for our teachers, so they bring the latest teaching tools into our classrooms. We continue that relationship this year as we strive to transform technology in the district to prepare our students for 21st-century learning that involves complex thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.

This year the Board of Education will tackle its most important task: selecting the next educational leader for District 62. Dr. Jane Westerhold announced she would retire when her contract ends in June 2016.

Dr. Westerhold’s leadership for the past eleven years has always focused on what is best for our students. She has moved the district light years ahead, and we expect our next superintendent to continue that trend. While we will miss Dr. Westerhold’s guidance, we are confident that we will find a leader who is as passionate about education as she is.

Education takes place in many ways, and I encourage you to get involved. Whether it is volunteering at a school, mentoring students, coaching after school, or giving encouraging words, students benefit from having many opportunities to succeed. You are always welcome at school board meetings where you can learn what our students are doing and what is happening in the schools.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Duckmann
Board President
