Anti-Bullying Bracelets Remind Students to Not Bully - Chippewa Teacher Emily Arens

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services describes bullying as purposely hurting or scaring another person. Examples that might occur include teasing, excluding certain kids from activities, making up rumors or physically hurting another child. Teaching children about bullying helps reduce more severe forms of bullying as students grow older.

Getting Chippewa Middle School involved in the anti-bullying movement makes it even more effective. Chippewa teacher Emily Arens and her Language Arts/Literature class created an awareness and fundraising campaign that involved researching bullying facts and the problems associated with bullying, creating an imovie that was used as a psa during homeroom, and students designing and creating bracelets that will be sold in the café during lunch for 50 cents. The proceeds will be donated to suicide.org, a prevention and awareness organization.

The students in Mrs. Arens’s seventh grade have been working hard on creating Anti-Bully Bands. They will be selling them in the Chippewa Middle School cafeteria for 50 cents each and all donations will go to a teen suicide prevention center. These students have a motto. They believe that “if we all pull together, we can make a difference.”

This campaign incorporates literacy skills, and allows students to show that they don't accept bully behaviors in their school. Students wearing anti-bullying bracelets send a message to others and reminding them to not bully.

For more information, or purchase a bracelet, please contact Emily Arens at arense@d62.org, 847-824-1053.
