Children's Day / Día del Niño
On Wednesday, April 30th, Orchard Place School celebrated Children's Day (Día del Niño). Lindsay Santiago and Kristy Bustos organized the event with over 40 parents to honor the students at OP. The night was a huge success, with a buffet style dinner, crafts, games, face painting, entertainment and raffle. Over 450 were in attendance! Everyone had a smile on their face and it was refreshing to see the parents and students enjoying the festivities! Día del Niño is celebrated in over 30 countries worldwide.
Outdoor Ed
Orchard Place fifth grade classrooms moved to the outdoors during their annual Outdoor Education field trip to Lorado Taft in April. The weather was brisk and rainy, but students were able to experience a variety of hands-on learning activities. Outdoor education programs involve residential or journey-based experiences in which students participate in a variety of adventurous challenges such as hiking, climbing, canoeing, ropes courses, and group games. Outdoor education draws upon the philosophy, theory, and practices of experiential education and environmental education. Several parent volunteers joined the group, as well.
Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten Registration will take place on Tuesday, April 8 from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. Prospective kindergarteners and their parents will have the opportunity to take a tour of Orchard Place School, meet their Kindergarten teachers, learn about the Kindergarten curriculum, and purchase OP Spirit-wear at this event. Come and register your kindergartener on April 8!
Matricula para Kindergarten será el Martes 8 de abril desde las 4:30 hasta las 7:30 p.m. En este eventos los futuros niños de Kindergarten y sus padres tendrán la oportunidad de dar una paseo por la escuela Orchard Place, conocer a sus maestros, aprender acerca del currículo de Kindergarten, y comprar camisa de Orchard Place. ¡Venga a registrar a su niño de Kindergarten el 8 de abril!
50's Day
Orchard Place kindergartners were rocking and rolling during their 50's Day, and it included more than dancing. November 8 was the 50th day of attendance for this class. The Kindergarten teachers involved were Kristina Krueger, Mike Santopoalo and Kristyn Bustos. Since counting is essential in Kindergarten, both the morning and afternoon classes thought it was fun to acknowledge that day with many different activities. Kinders and their older school mates counted to 50 in English and Spanish; several kinesthetic activities were conducted for students to count how many things they could do in 50 seconds (including jumping jacks, hopping on one foot, saying their name, etc.), having their principal Lauren Leitao read the story "Reese's Pieces - Count by Fives" (up until 50). The celebration was topped off with rootbeer floats and an old-fashioned sock hop.
Orchard Place School is home to its own student-run television station – OPTV. Our students are able to produce a daily school broadcast live from the studio to each classroom in the building. The studio is also open to teachers to use as a curriculum tool to produce skits, plays, commercials public service messages etc. At various times during the year the Des Plaines Local Cable Access channel broadcasts our shows and specials events. All of our students will have an opportunity to be active participants on the OPTV at various times during the year while all 5th graders have the opportunity to run the studio on a rotational basis. Their involvement includes:
- Researching and writing scripts for daily broadcasts
- Anchoring
- Working in the control room with specialized studio equipment (editing, recording, sound, video editing)
- Lights, teleprompter operation, cameras
- Interviewing
