In September, Mrs. Donoghue’s 5th grade class received $100.00 gift card from Sam’s Club. The gift card was used to teach students how to purchase food to create a delicious salad bar. Prior to going to Sam’s Club the students brainstormed the food to purchase. From the suggestions a grocery list was created.
Next came the shopping. At Sam’s Club the students worked together to find the items on the list, compared quantities and prices, discussed how much to purchase of each item, and used a calculator to make sure we stayed within our budget. After shopping the students worked together preparing and serving the food. It was a lot of work, but the students enjoyed the experience. It was a great real world math lesson.
As you can see from the pictures we had a very healthy spread of vegetables including: lettuce, carrots, olives, cucumbers, peppers, eggs, tomatoes, and of course some bread for our starch. We were the envy of the school that day. See our pictures at Sam’s and our food spread.
Four juniors from Illinois Wesleyan visited Miss Hajdu's classroom. These four students are also penpals with us and part of our program "From Eagles to Titans Penpal Program." The students brought with them folders from the admissions office with applications, brochures, etc. for every student in our class. We also got a signed softball from the women's softball team, a poster from the golf team, and four course catalogs to look at. The IWU students presented a slideshow about themselves and life at IWU. We had about an hour to visit and learn about IWU. Our students were able to ask questions and learn all about the sights, sounds, and general campus life. Miss Hajdu's class is not only college bound, but we are very excited about it now!
You can help a child learn to love reading and learning!
Would you be willing to spend one hour a week doing something fun and fulfilling especially if you knew it could change a child's life forever?
If your answer is Yes, please consider being a tutor, mentor and friend for a child who needs help developing reading and language skills.
Through the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program, volunteers at Central, Orchard Place, Plainfield, and South Elementary Schools work to help children build reading skills, self-esteem and positive attitudes toward learning. Training and materials are provided; no teaching experience is needed.
How do I become a tutor?
You begin by completing the tutor training program, which is scheduled from 9 a.m-12 Noon, Wednesday, September 24, and Thursday, September 25, in the Forest Elementary School Board Room, 1375 Fifth Street, Des Plaines, IL.
Do I need teaching experience?
No. Your enthusiasm, patience and compassion are far more important. Your roles as a tutor are those of a friend and a role model.
What age are the children?
The program is designed for children in kindergarten through grade three, a critical period for developing reading and language skills.
Where and when will I tutor?
You may choose either Central, South, Orchard Place or Plainfield Elementary Schools. Your school district coordinator will help you find a time during the school day for your tutoring sessions.
What training will I receive?
Tutors complete an extensive training program based on a proven six-part plan of activities. You'll learn ways to draw out the child's experiences and create simple stories that form the basis for reading.
I am interested . . . tell me more.
