About Us
North School is a K-5 building with approximately 520 students. It is also home to a wide variety of programs that support the diversity of the student population. North School offers a wide continuum of services for students with special needs. Both Title I and Project Prevent are offered and provide additional reading support to identified at-risk students. Language support is provided via our ELL (English Language Learner) Program and our TBE (Transitional Bilingual Education) – Spanish. The SPARK program is a fee-based program that provides before and after-school childcare.
North School is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support). PBIS is a behavior management system that focuses on increasing positive behavior while reducing negative behaviors. There are four expected behaviors that are taught in all school contexts. The behaviors are Be Caring, Be Safe, Be Ready, Be Respectful.
The North School PTO is very active in fundraising and supporting the mission of North School. They provide a substantial amount of financial support and activities that enrich the experiences of the students and staff.
North School is actively involved with various community partners. Wheels, Inc. has been in partnership with the school for over 10 years. They provide a lunch-time tutoring program, pen-pal program for 4th graders, school supply and clothes drives, on the job experiences and tours for students, holiday gift drive and Halloween and Valentines Day treats for students. They also donate equipment and furniture to the school. North also partners with Kraft Foods, Inc. Kraft employees come to North and work with 3rd grade students in the nutrition arena. Along with Wheels, Inc. we have senior citizens involved in the RSVP Program and Elks that provide one on one tutoring and support.
A team of North School teachers presented at the 2010 Annual Statewide NCLB Conference in February. These teachers were living the mission of North School, which includes positive lifelong leadership.
PBIS to RTI: One School’s Continuing Journey - If You Are Doing it Right!
In a multicultural high poverty setting, this school is applying the PBIS Improvement Process to RTI. After identifying and looking at data to improve behavior safety systems, North School is now applying the same rigor to core instruction and assessments. What does it look like to apply the PLC (Professional Learning Community) tenets of working interdependently with mutual accountability? How will we know when we get there?
It was a great experience for our team!
