Welcome to the Community Relations Department!
Communicating with the parents of more than 4,600 students, our 700 employees, and Des Plaines residents and taxpayers is critical as our schools work towards building a strong constituency of supporters and strive towards increasing student achievement. We interact with hundreds of volunteers and share thousands of communiqués during any given school year, serving as a liaison between (and within) schools and communities. After all, when children, parents, educators and the community work together, students succeed.
What is the role of the Community Relations Department?
The Community Relations Department:
- Coordinates communication with both internal and external shareholders via various publications, email, and website information
- Facilitates media relations, working closely with print reporters, as well as television and radio stations, to report daily/weekly District 62 activities, as well as serving as a liaison in emergency situations
- Coordinates District 62 volunteer organizations, which serve students and staff by providing the additional support necessary to sustaining quality education - including the Parent Leader Council, 62 CORP (Activity Pass), Community Advisory Board, Marketing Advisory Committee, PR Corp, and Business Community Education Partnerships and serves as a liaison with the City of Des Plaines and the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce
- Facilitates the District 62 Education Foundation activities,
which enhance the educational program above and beyond what tax
dollars can provide, including the funding, and awarding of classroom
mini-grants, corporate sponsorship and Cents for Kids
What is the mission of the Community Relations Department?
The mission of the Community Relations Department of the School District 62 is to creatively promote the district and to inform others through effective communication. As such, the department develops an annual Community Relations Plan outlining numerous projects and programs designed to open lines of communications with our publics. The District 62 Community Relations Plan is based on the following Key Principles:
- Continued academic improvement of all students and the financial stability of the School District.
- Schools belong to the public and the public is entitled to be informed about the operations of the School District.
- Schools operate best when they have a positive relationship with the community in which the community can make known their aspirations for education and the Board of Education can make known its plans and actions.
- It is the responsibility of every member of the school district to promote good school-community relations
All performance measures are reported on an annual basis to the Board of Education. A copy of this plan may be viewed by visiting the Publications section of the News section.
