Iroquois to Host Community FOSS Science Night and Open House

Iroquois Community School will showcase student science demonstrations, building improvements and renovations, and feature a local science expert during a FOSS science night and open house on Thursday, May 9. This event will give school officials a chance to show off the 45-year-old school to the Des Plaines community.

Principal Michael Amadei said the public is invited to visit and tour the school, 1836 Touhy Ave., from 6-6:40 PM and attend a special presentation by Mr. Freeze of the Fermilab Cryogenic Show. "Our open house will feature student science demonstrations, tours, and refreshments,” Amadei said.

Dr. Jane Westerhold, Superintendent of Schools, said the school, originally built in 1967, received many needed upgrades, from interactive technology, fresh paint and flooring, to upgraded HVAC and lighting systems. The most impressive difference is the installation of exterior windows, which provides more natural light. The renovation, which was part of the District 62’s Master Plan, provides brighter, ore efficient learning spaces. Westerhold said that technology wiring and bandwidth were greatly improved. More interactive technology and learning spaces are provided with the conversion of some classrooms to Technology Integrated Learning Environments (TILEs), which now occupies the interior of the building. "When you combine the exterior windows with an open TILE and bright new finishes, the school shines,” she said.

Iroquois, which was one of three schools renovated during Phase III of the District 62 Master Plan, is not the only D62 school to host a community open house this spring. Tuesday, May 21, Orchard Place Elementary School will host a community open house.
