BOO! Cumberland’s Halloween Celebration Was A Success!

Cumberland students and families enjoyed Halloween with a variety of activities. To start the celebration, everyone participated in an awesome sing-a-long directed by our music teacher, Mrs. Stacey Magnusson. Next, teachers walked outside with their classrooms in the annual Cumberland Halloween parade. Finally, students enjoyed classroom parties thanks to the planning of our Cumberland families.

Cumberland Hosts Grandparents’ Day

On Friday, October 23, 2008, Cumberland Elementary School hosted over 130 guests at their annual Grandparents Day. Grandparents participated in classroom activities, recess, and lunch in this awesome event! Thank you to everyone who helped us make Grandparents’ Day a success.

Chief Meteorologist Visits Cumberland

Amy Freeze, the Chief Meteorologist at Fox News Chicago, visited Cumberland Elementary School to educate fourth and fifth grade students about the weather. Ms. Freeze shared a wealth of information and even taught us that the weight of a cloud is more than several elephants! We also learned that hurricanes are the largest storms in the world and tornadoes are the fastest! The students and staff really enjoyed the opportunity to meet Ms. Freeze and understand very interesting weather facts. We look forward to having her come back and visit us some time soon!

Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe

The Cumberland Elementary School professional staff is excited to have begun its participation in the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports network (PBIS). PBIS is a school-wide, student-centered system that offers a consistent and common language to define behavior expectations for students. Its basic principles intend to create a positive, orderly, and safe learning environment for all students. We are enthusiastic about PBIS and its potential to contribute to a positive student culture at Cumberland. The principles of PBIS offer specific skill instruction for students that identify expectations, as well as recognize children for internalizing their responsibilities.

The PBIS network has been widely accepted in many schools throughout the county (including several schools in District 62) and has been consistently recognized for improving the learning environment and climate in schools. Cumberland Elementary School’s PBIS Team has trained with the PBIS network and is comprised of nine classroom teachers, one social worker, the school principal, and Darryl Cheeks (parent). Together, the Universal Team created the “Cougar Code."

The Cougar Code consists of three school-wide expectations:

Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be Safe

At the start of the school year, all students participated in training sessions throughout the school to learn “Cougar Code” expectations in a variety of settings including the playground, hallways, and lunchroom.

The Cumberland staff is extremely proud of how well students have responded to our Cougar Code. We are looking forward to continued success throughout the school year.

Lighten Up!

The 5th grade students at Cumberland Elementary School recently presented "Lighten Up: A Celebration of Humor" by Theresa Jennings, directed by Mrs. Amy Taylor. The performances for our school and our community were held on Tuesday, April 8th. In variety show format, with a bit of "Red Skelton" flair, students told jokes, sang silly songs, and had the audience giggling in their seats. Special guest performers included The Crocodile Gal, Phlegis Rilbin, Asparagus Spears, and Carmen Banana. Performances on the Boomwhacker instruments and a Recorder arrangement of the jazz standard, "Tiger Rag" were a highlight. Students did a fantastic job, and fun was had by all!

Cumberland Sings with Jim Gill

On Monday, March 17th, Cumberland Elementary students were treated to a special Cultural Arts Performance. Students enjoyed the talents of performer, Jim Gill. Mr. Gill inspires students through his gift of including movement while singing a selection of rhyming tunes and has earned awards from the American Library Association and The Parents' Choice Foundation. Children loved having the opportunity to participate in an interactive activity. Dancing and singing along to memorable lyrics was the perfect opportunity for everyone to enjoy the afternoon. A special thanks is extended to Cumberland's chairperson for Cultural Arts, Mrs. Barb Grooms.

Cumberland Chorus Entertains Business Partners

Under the direction of Amy Taylor, Cumberland Elementary School students performed songs of the season for the staff of Littelfuse of Des Plaines.  Performers donned Santa hats and antlers to sing a wide medley of holiday tunes for their school-business partner.  Songs ranged from rap to Frank Sinatra-like tunes, complete with candy canes and kick lines.  The students also performed for the residents of Oakton Arms.

Hugs not Drugs

Cumberland celebrated Red Ribbon Week (October 22 - 26) with a theme each day - everything from wearing a favorite sports team's logo (because we're teaming up against drugs) to crazy socks day (because we're "socking it" to drugs.) Thursday's theme was "Hugs Not Drugs" and students brought in their favorite stuffed animal to show their support. Cumberland Elementary School students are very proud to say "NO" to drugs!
