Principal's Message

Welcome! My name is Leah Kimmelman, and I am proud to be the principal of Cumberland Elementary School. I have been a public educator for more than a decade and enjoy my work as a school leader. The staff, students and families at Cumberland are wonderful, innovative and an exciting group of people with whom to work. Our school is filled with tremendous energy and enthusiasm.

Located in the northeast part of Des Plaines, Cumberland has been serving the educational needs of its students for over fifty years and has a proud tradition of being child-centered. The Cumberland community is collaborative and dedicated to maintaining a culture that welcomes all children and families.

The staff at Cumberland Elementary school is knowledgeable and versed in the academic and social / emotional development of all children. The professional staff employ research-based best practices that serve to meet the educational needs of all students. A variety of instructional resources are utilized to address district and state learning standards. All students receive instruction in the content areas of reading, mathematics, science, health, and social studies. Additionally, children participate in “specials” classes such as art, physical education, literacy enrichment, and music/drama.

Cumberland Elementary School’s 2008-2009 School Improvement Plan focuses on contributing to the improvement of student learning and achievement in the content areas of mathematics, reading, and writing. Instructional decisions are made to support these goals and to provide optimal learning opportunities for all children. Our plan for improvement is reviewed and adjusted continuously.

Children at Cumberland Elementary School are exposed to a nationally recognized program entitled “Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.” This program, also known as PBIS, supports social / emotional development and contributes to a safe and orderly learning environment for all students. Our "Cougar Code” focuses on three overarching principles: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. Our emphasis on positive behavioral expectations is founded in the philosophy that all students have the ability to reach their full potential as learners and individuals.

Cumberland Elementary School is a wonderful place for learning and development. We are proud of its traditions and accomplishments. Our website offers a wealth of information and excellent resources. Please take the time to visit it regularly.
