Cumberland Procedures, Reminders & Updates

Arrival Procedures / Morning Supervision: Morning supervision of students begins at 8:45 a.m. Students should not be dropped off or arrive at school before 8:45 a.m. All students who are walking to school or being driven should be dropped off on the playground area between Cumberland and Chippewa Middle School. General Education Kindergarten students should be taken to the outdoor entrance of their classroom. Students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade should remain on the playground area. Students in 4th and 5th grade should walk around the building toward the Intermediate Wing Entrance near the Cumberland Prairie and basketball hoops. Students should not be dropped off at the building’s main entrance, as there is bus and vehicle traffic. Students who are bussed to school will be supervised and taken to the appropriate entrance. The morning schedule is as follows:

8:45 a.m. - Student Supervision Begins
8:50 a.m. - First Bell (Students Line Up)
8:55 a.m. - Second Bell (Students Enter the Building)
9:00 a.m. - Third Bell (Students Enter Classrooms)

If your child is late and will be arriving after 9:00 a.m., he or she needs to be brought into the main office by an adult.

Lunch: Lunch / Recess begins at 12:10 p.m. This is a change from years’ past, so please make note. Students in Special Needs Preschool, Special Needs Kindergarten, MTSEP Programs, 1st, and 2nd grade will eat lunch from 12:10 p.m. until 12:35 p.m. and go outside for recess from 12:35 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will go outside for recess from 12:10 p.m. until 12:35 p.m. and eat lunch from 12:35 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Dismissal Procedures / After-School Supervision: Outdoor after-school supervision of students is from 3:30 p.m. until 3:40 p.m. on all regular school days except for Mondays. On Mondays, students are dismissed at 3:15 p.m., and outdoor supervision will be provided until 3:25 p.m. Students in General Education Kindergarten should be picked up at their classroom’s outdoor exit. Students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade should be picked up on the playground area between Cumberland and Chippewa Middle School. Students in 4th and 5th Grade should be picked up at the Intermediate Wing Door or on the Primary Playground. Please note that if a student is not picked up by the time supervision has ended, he or she will be brought back in to the building and will wait in the main office until an adult arrives.

Office Hours: The Cumberland Office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day that school is in session.

First Day of School: The first day of school for students in the MTSEP Programs and 1st through 5th grade is on Monday, August 25. This will be a 1/2 day, and dismissal will be at 12:00 p.m. Their first full day of school will be the following day, Tuesday, August 26. The first day of school for students in Special Needs Preschool, General Education Kindergarten, and Special Needs Kindergarten will be on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Cumberland Facts

Approximately 350 students in Preschool through Fifth Grade attend Cumberland Elementary School. We are part of Community Consolidated School District 62. Students leave Cumberland and go on to attend Chippewa Middle School.

Cumberland Elementary School has a variety of programs to meet the educational needs of its student population. In additional to a full complement of kindergarten through fifth grade regular education programs, Cumberland has a preschool and kindergarten program for students with identified special learning needs. Our building is also home to Educational Life Skills, Multiple Needs, and Structured Teaching classrooms as part of the Maine Township Special Education Program cooperative. A variety of support services are available to students as per their learning needs including, but not limited to, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, English language learning resource, vision therapy, speech pathology, learning disability resource, and psychology.
