History of Cumberland Elementary
Cumberland Elementary School is a one-story school that was built in 1954. Following are some interesting facts about the building and its surroundings:
- Cumberland was built in 1954 on a 23-acre site that is shared with Chippewa Middle School.
- Robert Paulsen was the first principal of Cumberland. A garden and plaque in his honor are located in the northeast courtyard.
- A prairie was cultivated in 1999 with the support of Ken Schaefer from Oakton Community College. Two commemorative benches overlook the prairie in honor of former principal and District 62 Interim Superintendent, Dr. Christine Schumacher.
- A time capsule was buried on the school grounds in 2004 to commemorate the building’s fiftieth anniversary. In 2054, the capsule will be unearthed by future Cumberland staff, students, families, and community members.
- The northernmost part of Cumberland’s property was once home to the last farm in the city of Des Plaines.
- Cumberland’s mascot is the Cougar, and its school colors are royal blue and white.
