Chippewa Principal

Dr. Leah Kimmelman has served as principal of the preschool through fifth grade elementary school since 2005. She began her teaching career as a seventh grade teacher at Jack London Middle School in Wheeling. Prior to coming to District 62, she was an assistant principal at Hawthorn Elementary School in Vernon Hills and taught sixth grade Language Arts at Maple School in Northbrook.

As an educational leader of a diverse student population comprised of eleven regular education and eleven self-contained special education classrooms, Dr. Kimmelman introduced, implemented, and lead school-wide participation in the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) network. She collaborates with staff using student achievement data as a standard of professional teaching practices and decision-making. Dr. Kimmelman supervises and evaluates approximately 40 certified and 50 classified staff members. In addition to guiding the teaching and learning of 311 students, she oversees student discipline, coordinates community relations efforts, manages state and local standardized tests, facilitates parent communications, and maintains fiscal responsibility.

Dr. Kimmelman contributes to district-level improvement efforts by participating on the parent/student handbook, board of education policy alignment, teacher recruitment, professional development, student safety, and architectural committees and activities. She is the District 62 principal representative to the Midwest Principal’s Center.

Dr. Kimmelman earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Kansas. She holds master’s degrees in Educational Leadership and Curriculum from Northeastern Illinois University and North Park University, respectively. Dr. Kimmelman earned a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership/ Superintendent from Argosy University in May 2010.
