History of the School
Central School, originally named South Division School, opened in October 1906 as a four-room building on the south side of Thacker Street between Lee and Center Streets. Four more classrooms were added in 1914, and another eight in 1929. At the same time, the School district changed the school’s name to Central School.
In the mid 1950’s the School District was faced with two challenges: rising student enrollment and deteriorating buildings. The community responded by approving the building of two new buildings. In September 1961 the new Central School located on the north side of Thacker just east of Cora, opened its doors to students.
Central School continues today as a friendly neighborhood school on the north side of Thacker at 1526 East Thacker Street. It is a comfortable, air-conditioned building with a playground, blacktop and two baseball diamonds.
