Central School Celebrates International Walk to School Day
Central School, City of Des Plaines Mayor Martin Moylan, Aldermen Patricia Haugeberg and John Robinson, along with District 62 administrators joined schools from around and the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 7, 2009.
Approximately 250 students walked to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders. Mayor Moylan rode his bicycle.
In the U.S., International Walk to School Day included 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. joined children and adults in 40 countries around the world.
Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
The event was organized by the Central School Parent Teacher Council and the City of Des Plaines.
