Algonquin Middle School hosted a Literacy Night event on Tuesday, May 9th from 7-8pm. Over sixty families attend the event where there were various activities such as a read-aloud room, a Des Plaines Public Library room, a makerspace area where families could create bookmarks, learning about ebooks that D62 offers, and more! Every student received a free book, enjoyed refreshments and Matt Masek was the raffle winner and received a Macbook Air!

August 26 marked the 6th annual Reading Celebration Day for Algonquin Middle School students and staff, a culminating event as part of the Algonquin Middle School Summer Reading Program. Over the summer all Algonquin students and staff members read a book. During Reading Celebration Day, they gather into small groups to discuss great books on Reading Celebration Day. "This event brings our students and staff together in a love of reading," said School Library Media Specialist Erin Wengerhoff.

  • Algonquin Middle School principal, John Swanson, talks about the book "The Story of Owen," by E.K. Johnston with students.
  • Algonquin Middle School teacher, Sarita Miller, leads a book discussion with students.
  • Algonquin Middle School teacher, Mike Galetano, leads a book discussion with students.

It's almost time to welcome our incoming 6th grade class to Algonquin and welcome back our 7th and 8th graders. With the Tyler Parent Portal, all AMS students already have access to their current schedules. If you would like to come in to Algonquin, pick up a paper copy of the schedule, and walk the building to see where your classes are located, you may do so on Tuesday, August 16th from 8:00 - 3:00. Just come to the office to pick up your schedule and you'll be able to walk the building. Office staff and administration will be around to answer questions. See you soon!

With the opening of school fast approaching, we want to remind families about these important ideas:

  • In addition to 6th graders needing physicals, 7th and 8th graders who plan on trying out for sports teams in the 2016-17 school year will need current physicals, too. Co-ed Cross Country starts as soon as we return to school. All Algonquin students, including 6th graders, may participate in Cross Country.
  • Girls' Basketball tryouts will begin on Tuesday, August 23rd and Wednesday, August 24th after school. Please be aware that in order to participate in basketball next school year, girls need to have had a sports physical after November 1, 2015 for it to be used to try out in the 2016 school year. There will also be an Open Gym the first day of school on Monday, August 22nd from 2:45-4:00 for those who wish to sharpen their skills before tryouts and for those who can be picked up at 4pm since there will be no activity bus that day. No athlete will be penalized for not being able to attend Open Gym.
  • Students should finish their summer reading books before school starts. We have a great summer reading celebration planned.
  • There are handbook updates about food at school and dress code. Check Algonquin’s Facebook page or D62’s Online Board Policy at for more information.
  • In our ongoing efforts to keep Algonquin a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment, we will be focusing on cell phone etiquette and acceptable use this school year. D62 policy states “all electronic devices must be kept off and out of sight during the regular school day” unless staff allows the usage, the usage is part of a student’s IEP, or in case of emergency. This past year, we saw an increase in student cell phone usage during the school day and an increase in cell phone theft, as well. We want to address both of those issues. We will be instructing students to keep their phones locked in their lockers during the school day. If students do keep their phones with them during the school day, we expect them to be “off and out of sight” as D62 policy indicates.

  • Providing a “walk-in” environment for students who:
    • would like to work on group projects,
    • would like to get help from a teacher or peer,
    • would like an alternative to working at home,
    • need computer/internet access to complete school work.
  • Providing a positive alternative to school suspensions.
  • Provide small group instructional opportunities.
  • Provide enrichment opportunities for advanced students.

Times: 8:00 – 11:00 a.m., Students should arrive on time and stay for the entire session unless previous arrangements have been made.
Students should bring snack, materials such as pens/pencils, paper, calculator, notebooks and school books as necessary, a book for independent silent reading, and a good attitude is recommended!
