History of Algonquin Middle School
Algonquin Middle School was designed and built, during the years of 1953 and 1954, on a twenty-acre site that is now shared with Forest Elementary School and the Administration Center. For the first two years, the Algonquin building housed all eight elementary grades and kindergarten groups.
As enrollment increased, the lower grades were moved to the newly built, Forest Elementary School, and in 1966 Algonquin became a junior high school housing only seventh and eighth graders. The original building provided thirty classrooms and special areas for graphic arts, general shop, foods, sewing, visual art, science, physical education, music, library, cafeteria, administration, and counseling.
In 1973, an addition provided three classrooms and a new Library Media Center (LMC). In 1977, Algonquin and Iroquois merged. Then, in 1998, we became a true middle school, housing sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. The completion of a new addition containing a handicap accessible entrance, lobby, school office, administrative offices, and two new classrooms, was completed in 2002. Additionally, the reconstruction of several classrooms and offices was completed during that time.
