Algonquin Dress Code

Students are expected to come to school clean, well groomed, and dressed in a manner appropriate for a school environment. Students shall have the right to dress and groom themselves according to their personal taste as long as such dress and grooming do not present health or safety hazards, disrupt the educational process, or negatively affect discipline. Parents are expected to assume responsibility for their children's attire. This support and cooperation is vital in order to enhance the learning environment.

  • Dress which is extreme, exhibitionist, or of immodest fit or style to the extent that it interferes with the instructional process will not be allowed (i.e. halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, strapless tops, crop tops, backless shirts, muscle shirts, or tops with only one shoulder covered).
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses should be no shorter than mid-thigh.
  • Garments that are see-through, cut low, or expose one’s midriff or cleavage are not acceptable.
  • Undergarments should not be visible at any time.
  • Mutilated clothing should not be worn to school.
  • Any clothing depicting, advertising, or promoting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or violence will not be allowed on clothing or jewelry.
  • No clothing or jewelry can be worn containing messages or symbols that are vulgar, include inappropriate language, depict sexual action or innuendo, that are racist, that are gang-related or satanic in nature.
  • Due to health and safety considerations and gang identifications, hats, bandanas/scarves, hoods, outdoor jackets, sunglasses, rubber bands, spiked jewelry, hanging belts, and pocket/wallet chains that dangle from clothes are not allowed
  • Clothing or other items must not be worn that are considered to be gang identifiers by law enforcement and our school.  Any attire, item, insignia, or symbol, which warrants reasonable cause to believe it is a gang identifier, is strictly prohibited.
  • Dress or footwear that has any features that can damage physical property will not be allowed.  Footwear that protects the foot and safeguards the health of others must be worn.
  • Dress should be clean for the protection of health and comfort of all individuals.  Personal grooming should maintain the standards of cleanliness, which protect the health, and comfort of all individuals.

The dress code is applicable on school property including dances, social and/or sporting events, or when on a field trip. The code must be followed when representing Algonquin Middle School in any venue.

All staff members will check for compliance with the dress code policy throughout the school day, beginning with attendance center.  Any student violating the dress code will be required to go to the main office.  A designated staff member, of the same gender, will determine if the dress code has been violated.  If so, the student will be given appropriate clothing to change into for the remainder of the school day.  When the student is given this appropriate clothing, they will be required to leave their inappropriate clothing item(s) in the office.  Upon return of the school issued clothing, the student will receive their clothing back.

Intentional and/or repeated violations, including subsequent violations within the same day, will result in further disciplinary action.
