District 62 School Board Announces Superintendent Retirement

After 11 years at the helm of the Community Consolidated School District 62, the Board of Education announces that Dr. Jane L. Westerhold, Superintendent of Schools, will leave the position at the end of the 2015-2016 school year.

Board of Education President Stephanie Duckmann said that Westerhold’s retirement is bittersweet. “Dr. Westerhold’s leadership has always focused on what is best for our students,” Duckmann said. “Her vision and leadership resulted in major renovations that offer safe and secure learning environments in every school, the creation of an early learning center, increased technology integration, and a partnership with Discovery Education that ensures that every student is prepared for success in high school and beyond. Jane has moved the district light years ahead and the Board of Education expects her successor to continue that trend.”

Dr. Westerhold will officially retire June 30, 2016 at the end of her contract. Citing a 38-year career in education, Westerhold said her retirement would give her more time to spend with her family and the chance to experience some new personal and professional challenges.

Following her graduation from Staunton High School, Westerhold earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern Illinois University and her doctorate degree from Loyola University. She began her education career as a kindergarten teacher. Shortly after, she was appointed principal in Worden School District 16. After serving as an assistant principal and principal in Edwardsville, IL, she moved to Schaumburg, where she served as a principal and director. Prior to coming to District 62, she served as the director of curriculum and instruction in Wauconda, IL and assistant superintendent of Valley View Community School District 365 U.

Westerhold believes that she’s left the district in a good position, especially the $109 million multi-year academic and facility renovation project and the Discovery Education professional development partnership.

As school board president, Duckmann is tasked with leading the effort to find Westerhold’s replacement. Duckmann said that the board will select a search firm that will conduct a comprehensive search. The board expects to announce Westerhold’s successor after winter break. Duckmann expects to have a good pool of candidates to choose from. She said that an ideal candidate would continue to focus on student achievement, professional development, parent engagement, and community outreach, while adding his or her own personal touch.
