Forest Elementary School Awarded Community Grant
Recently, Forest Elementary School in Des Plaines, Ill., was presented a $4,000 community grant from Des Plaines, IL-based UOP, a Honeywell company. The check presentation was held at Forest Elementary School.

The community grant money will be used to fund the Mad Science program, which will allow Forest School to provide each of its students with a hands-on, in-class workshop about Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Life Sciences, twice a year. UOP was able to make the donation through Honeywell's 101A charitable grant program. The program is part of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, which focuses on the four important societal needs that align with the company's heritage, products and people: science and math education; family safety and security; housing and shelter; and humanitarian relief.

Forest Elementary School is part of Community Consolidated School District 62 and educates children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Forest School also houses the Low Incidence Cooperative Agreement (LICA) program for deaf and hearing impaired children.

Forest Reads Across America
Last Friday, Forest Elementary School students kicked off Dr. Seuss’ birthday by hosting Read Across America Day. The event set the stage for Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) testing, which began this week and runs through March 13.

Aimed at raising awareness about the importance of reading, the school's reading event included special appearances by school board members, retired educators, aldermanic candidates, Superintendent Jane Westerhold and Assistant Superintendent Diep Nguyen.

The challenge to get youngsters to read continues to grow, according to a recent study by the National Endowment for the Arts that found teenagers and young adults are reading less often and for shorter amounts of time.

Forest Fourth Grader Places Third in Design Contest

School District 62 recently announced the winners of the 2008 Winter Card Design Contest. Board of Education President Brenda Murphy presented each with a ribbon and a plaque. The first place winner is featured in cards sent by the District during the holiday season.

Stephanie Delles, Iroquois Community School fifth grader, captured first place with her drawing of a child who finds a snowman warming his ‘hands’ in front of the fireplace.

Namitha Abraham, Algonquin Middle School, and Bailey Radnitzer, Forest Elementary School, placed second and third, respectively.

More than 60 students entered the contest, which was judged by members of the Des Plaines Arts Council. All entries will be on display from Wednesday, December 3 through Monday, January 5 at the Des Plaines Public Library.

Celebrating Veterans Day

"Forest School celebrated the dedication and sacrifice of our Military Veterans in three moving performances on Thursday, November 13th . The Beginners’ Band opened the performance, followed by a solo performance of “To the Colors” by Mrs. Jancsovics, then the 4th and 5th grade students sang patriotic songs. Forest was honored to have Color Guard Members from Park Ridge, Des Plaines and Mt. Prospect present the flags at each performance. Many members of the audience were moved to tears as the children sang. The music teacher, Ms. Karen Nystrom, orchestrated the entire show, with help from many members of the Forest Staff."
